Mercedes Sanchez Varela is the Partner and Head of the EU Office and an experienced EU insider. She is responsible for developing KPMG business with the EU and heads the EU Office team which facilitates the efforts of the KPMG network in their pursuit of EU tenders. In her function, she manages daily our strategic relationships with the EU institutions and voices KPMG expertise on key EU policies. Mercedes has more than 18 years of working experience with European institutions, completing missions as an expert and managing large EU-funded projects. She has previously worked for other international institutions such as the World Bank, African Development Bank (ADB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) whilst having begun her career in Africa as an Economist at the UN development program (UNDP). Bilingual in Spanish and French, Mercedes is fluent in English, speaks Portuguese and some Dutch.
