In its 18th consecutive year, the Global Automotive Executive Survey is KPMG International's annual assessment of the current state and future prospects of the worldwide automotive industry.
In this year's Global Automotive Executive Survey by KPMG, almost 1,000 senior executives from the world's leading automotive companies were interviewed, including automakers, suppliers, dealers, financial services providers, rental companies, mobility services providers and companies from the information and communication technology (ICT) sector. In addition, more than 2,400 consumers from around the world shared their valuable perceptions to compare their opinions against those of the world's leading auto executives.
The survey results this year showed that the car itself will not be the main source of profit in the future: 85% of executives agree on the importance of the digital ecosystem generating higher revenues than the hardware of the car itself.

Besides technical features of the vehicles, the trends touch on economic side of the industry stating key trends such as market growth in emerging markets and rationalization of production in Western Europe.
The best prospects over the next 5 years has BMW which replaced Toyota as #1. Electric pioneer Tesla improved its position by three ranks in comparison to last year, whereas Volkswagen failed to maintain its position in the top-3.
Furthermore, a transition from the focus on the product lifecycle to customer lifecycle occurs in the industry.
