The following skilled regional provisional visas will be available from 16 November 2019:

  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491) visa for individuals nominated by a State or Territory government or sponsored by an eligible family member to live and work in regional Australia.
  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) (subclass 494) visa for individuals sponsored by an employer in regional Australia, replacing the Regional (Provisional) (subclass 489) visa.

The Government has also announced the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) (subclass 191) visa which will commence on 16 November 2022. This visa will be open to Subclass 494 and 491 visa holders only and replaces the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187) visa.

KPMG expects that the introduction of the new regional visas and DAMAs will be well received by employers currently unable to source and retain employees in regional areas of Australia.
