People holding question mark boards

Last week the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) released additional information on the website regarding employer obligations under Single Touch Payroll (STP).

The employer obligations guide addresses the following common questions that we have been hearing from employers:

  1. What do we need to report (including specifics of label disclosures and what is mandatory versus voluntary)?
  2. When and how do we report?
  3. How do we report off-cycle payments and termination payments?
  4. How should we report and adjust for foreign employment income?
  5. How do we report employee’s reportable fringe benefit amounts and reportable employer superannuation contributions?
  6. How do we amend an incorrect report and how long do we have?
  7. How do we report a new Tax File Number (TFN) declaration?
  8. How do we notify the ATO that the information is correct and final at year end in lieu of producing payment summaries?
  9. What should we do when transitioning between payroll providers?
  10. When do we remit Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding to the ATO?

As the mandatory start date for STP approaches (1 July 2018), employers should be discussing with their payroll provider when the software will be available and ready for testing to ensure there is sufficient time for an effective implementation.

Under STP, the ATO will have access to more payroll information than ever before. We are assisting many of our clients to undertake a review of their PAYG Withholding and Superannuation data and system configurations before they go live. This can provide a level of assurance to directors and senior executives that the additional payroll reporting will not result in questions around underpayments from the ATO.
