There has been a five-fold increase in the number of fintech startup companies in Australia over the past 5 years and the sub-sectors covered have become more diverse. Our map demonstrates the scale and diversity of the rapidly evolving Australian fintech sector.
Investment in the Australian fintech sector has risen from $US53 million in 2012 to over $U675m in 2016. The number of fintech startups in Australia has increased from less than 100 in 2014 to approximately 650+ companies today.
The Australian fintech ecosystem is becoming increasingly diverse, with 10 fintech subsectors having more than 20 fintechs operating locally.
The two largest sectors by number of fintech companies, as well as investment, are payments and lending. Areas such as wealthtech and capital markets continue to grow, alongside the emergence of newer categories such as regtech, blockchain and insurtech.
