Take advantage of the IBM sub-capacity software licensing terms

Tracking and maintaining software licences can be complex. Businesses need to make sure that only the allowed number of licences are in use, and at the same time, that there are enough licences for everyone using it. Getting it wrong either way can be costly – purchasing software licences beyond your actual usage is often expensive and unnecessary, but complying and optimising licence usage is not always straightforward.

IBM is one of the largest enterprise solution providers in the industry. A number of IBM products are licenced-based on the activated processor cores in the server where these products are installed. As a result of sophisticated server virtualisation technologies, virtual central processing units and virtual servers can now be moved and resized on the fly. To cater to customers who use these technologies, IBM provides flexible licensing for virtualised environments, i.e. sub-capacity licensing.

The sub-capacity model provides a reduced licensing requirement compared to full capacity. A number of eligibility criteria under sub-capacity must be met including the deployment, management and reporting using an IBM approved tool for sub-capacity licensing (i.e IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT), IBM Bigfix or other products). Failure to comply with this last requirement means that the installed software will need to be licensed on the full capacity pricing model.

Implementing ILMT correctly will give you access to sub-capacity pricing and will help enhance your software asset management (SAM) strategy, gain control over your environment, and realise cost savings based on software optimisation.
