In order to address youth unemployment in Queensland, a “Youth Boost” grant of up to $20,000 will be paid to employers for hiring workers aged between 15 and 24 in regional Queensland. This doubles the amount previously available under the Regional Queensland Back to Work Scheme.

The incentive is limited, and available for 3 months only (between 1 December 2016 and 28 February 2017), a period strategically chosen by the Government to coincide with the end of the school and tertiary year. Employers need to act fast to avoid missing out, and consider whether it would be appropriate to fast forward their recruitment plans to coincide with the 3 month eligibility period.

With the introduction of the Youth Boost scheme and the Queensland Back to Work Scheme, the following grants are now available to employers in regional Queensland:

  • Up to $20,000 for hiring youth workers
  • Up to $10,000 for hiring workers aged over 24
  • Up to $15,000 for hiring workers aged over 24 who have been unemployed for at least 52 weeks.

KPMG have been successful in assisting employers to access these grants, and overcoming the hurdles involved in administering the scheme, with minimal effort required by the business. Some of the hurdles include:

  • determining eligibility under the scheme
  • determining employees' previous employment history
  • ensuring employees are registered within the required timeframe
  • monitoring entitlements under the scheme and ensuring claims are made within the required timeframes
  • ensuring that robust processes and the required documentation are in place to support the claims being made
