Module 1: Balancing a family and a business
Learn why balancing a family’s emotional ties and the business’ financial performance is key to success.
What happens when being part of a family, and being part of a business, collide? This master class will explore why it’s essential to balance the emotional ties that a family has, with strategies for the financial performance of the business. We’ll draw on key insights from KPMG’s Balance for success – 2018 Family Business Survey, which revealed that harnessing the family’s emotional connection to the business is a competitive advantage. We’ll provide the building blocks for a strategy to align the family and business, look at the importance of communication, and how to build a shared vision.

Module 2: The importance of good governance
How to build business and family governance structures for a sustainable future.
Good governance is a cornerstone of any successful business. But in family business, it takes on extra importance, because of its potential impact on the family. This module explores business governance, including the duties of company directors and of trustees of trusts. As a foundation, basic principles of company law and trust law will be explained. We’ll explore family governance, including the ways that families can promote harmony, engagement, and paths to leadership. This material covers family councils and family charters. We’ll also look at governance of the relationship between the family and the business, such as the rights and responsibilities of the family business owners and non-owners, family business leaders, and others employees. This material covers family constitutions and shareholders’ agreements, and the role of policies, such as employment and dividend policies.

Module 3: Empowering each generation
Harnessing the optimism of future leaders while embracing the wisdom of current leaders, with communication at the core. Bridging generation gaps in family businesses has always been challenging, and this problem is magnified when a business is undergoing transformation. Ineffective communication is a key issue, leading to uncertainty and underperformance, not to mention family conflicts, at times also affecting non-family stakeholders. This module explores how to take on board cross-generational perspectives, particularly through transformation or leadership transition. It considers how to embrace the legacy of the family business, and the views of its current leaders/founders, while concurrently taking on new ideas from the next generation. We look at why clear communication matters, and how current leaders can step away with confidence.

Module 4: Transition of leadership and ownership
Key strategies for the successful succession of the business.
In family business, often the founder expects to hand over the business to the next generation, but this plan isn’t clear to their supposed successors. Sometimes these successors aren’t interested, or they are, yet they don’t know what they’re working towards. This lack of clarity is a recipe for a breakdown in relationships and unfulfilled potential. However, this need not be the case. In this class, we’ll explore how to lead a successful transition into future leadership; and how to avoid the common pitfalls. We’ll help you to explore why/if the family wants to continue, what role family members will have in future, and how to navigate emotions through change.

Module 5: Future performance and technology
Equipping the business to compete in future markets through the implementation of technology.
For family businesses, engaging with current and future technologies is a minimum expectation of their customers and suppliers. However, the adoption of new technologies and systems is often a source of diverging views and tensions, and can appear more complex than it needs to be. In this master class, we’ll help you to understand how technology influences the vision, goals and strategies of your business. We’ll debunk some misconceptions and myths around technology, help you explore how your family business is positioned to maximise the benefits of technology, and offer tips for technology adoption. This master class is for all family business members who want to ensure the business is well placed to remain competitive into the future.
