Grad careers: Internal Audit

In a nutshell, what does your business group/service line do?

Governance, Risk & Controls Advisory provides a range of services to our clients including internal audit, risk advisory projects and compliance reviews across a number of industries, e.g. financial services, government agencies and corporate companies. We work together with our clients to help them achieve greater efficiencies by identifying improvement opportunities in business processes and risk and control frameworks. We’re providing insight and advice over identified risks.

The members of our team come from many different backgrounds and experience. We have a total of about 50 team members. The new Agile working environment fosters a collaborative approach in which everyone is in constant contact. Collectively the team is tight-knit and support is always available regarding both career and non-work related matters.

What does the average day look like?

Depending on client needs, you’d either be based in the office or at our client’s premises which may include travelling to various locations around Australia e.g. CBD, rural areas and interstate to conduct our work. Project lengths may vary between days to months.

As a new graduate, the majority of your time spent conducting fieldwork would involve business process walkthroughs with clients, testing of key controls to identify control weaknesses and on-site compliance reviews of stores.

What will I learn in the first year?

You’ll learn to conduct various types of reviews/internal audits amongst different sectors i.e. government, financial services and corporates. Through this, you’ll come to understand the risk and control framework, how to test and identify weaknesses and make improvement recommendations. Plus, you’ll develop a variety of soft skills that enhance your development and professionalism.

What’s the best part of the role?

The best part is the variety and nature of work that you will be engaged in throughout a year. With the vast multitude of projects and reviews, you’ll have the opportunity to gain exposure to many different sectors and clients. Each week may be different to the next in terms of the client work and even where you will be located, as there is plenty of opportunity to travel around Australia.
