In a nutshell, what does your business group/service line do?
Our Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) team advises corporate and private equity clients to identify and execute transactions. We advise each client throughout the deal lifecycle, from initial strategic analysis right through to successful completion in a lead financial advisory role. Our role can include the identification of buyers or sellers, providing advice on transaction terms and pricing, structuring, and negotiating ultimate transaction terms.
KPMG’s M&A practice is one of the largest and most successful M&A businesses in Australia, with an enviable list of completed transactions across a broad range of industries including technology, consumer markets, healthcare, industrial markets and energy & natural resources.
What does the average day look like?
As a high-performing team that sits across all aspects of a given transaction, no day is ever the same. From day one in the team you can expect to be involved in:
- preparing key transaction documentation including teaser documents, information memorandums and company presentations
- preparing and researching pricing materials and company valuation metrics
- detailed financial analysis and building of financial models
- supporting the day-to-day responsibility of execution on transaction, including interaction with clients, bidders, financiers and legal advisers
- liaising with other deal teams (i.e. due diligence experts and lawyers etc.)
- industry and target research for buyer ideas or business development origination.
You will constantly be challenged to think about the methodology for clients from both a financial and commercial perspective.
What will I learn in the first year?
Everything. In your first year, you will expand on the technical corporate finance skills you learned at university and put these into practice on a daily basis. In addition, you will gain a thorough understanding of the transaction lifecycle and commercial drivers of a transaction for both buyers and sellers.
The first year will see you develop your analytical and problem-solving skills, building and reviewing financial models, and developing your presentation skills.
Above all else, you will be getting into the detail of the commercial, operational and technical aspects of our clients’ businesses, learning the ins-and-outs of what they do, and the macro drivers and dynamics of their industries.
