Governments are constantly reinventing the way they interpret the world. Public sector entities can use AI to design better policies, make more informed decisions, and improve communication and engagement with citizens and residents. KPMG can support governments’ efforts to create more efficient, effective, and responsive policies and services, and assist them in their exploration and implementation of innovative approaches. Many governments have launched projects that use AI to help achieve their Sustainable Development Goals. For instance, the UAE government launched the ‘UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI)’ in 2017. In the future, it will be important to consider and prepare for the implications of AI on society, work, and human well-being.

We have identified four areas around how AI will enhance the performance of public sector institutions:

Anti-money laundering

The utility of AI is demonstrated through two compounding benefits: it accelerates the effectiveness and efficiency of financial crime investigations, and supports effective risk management. Additionally, it has the potential to reduce the costs of numerous challenges – mainly by slashing false-positive transactions in monitoring systems and focusing efforts to other, more productive areas of suspicious activity.

Public safety

Preventive policing is crucial in creating a safer community. AI is a game-changer in this regard; it augments the police force and enhances situational awareness capabilities. Moreover, AI employs pattern recognition to stop crimes before they materialize. By automating repetitive and labor intensive tasks, AI enables law-enforcement staff to focus on higher value work, without compromising swift, accurate customer services.

Healthcare

There is a direct relationship between AI and providing a holistic healthcare system while placing the patient at the heart of the care journey. Additionally, healthcare entities can utilize AI capabilities to help develop more transparent and responsive delivery models of healthcare services.

Smart city services

Today’s urban environment is constrained by many challenges, the most important of which is a diverse and expanding population. Through the use of real-time data and evidence, in addition to the automation of processes, the application of AI will compound the performance of ‘smart’ tasks and outcomes.
