Mohammad Zamani

Senior Manager, Audit, Financial Services

There is no “typical day” in KPMG Lower Gulf: each morning brings a fresh set of challenges with the opportunity to meet new people and engage with clients across a wide variety of industries. The work environment is stimulating, promoting openness and honesty, and we have the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the mechanics of the financial services sector.

I worked hard to be the first UAE-trained Emirati to complete the Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).  After qualifying as an ACA, I was offered the chance to go on a two-year secondment to KPMG’s lively and buzzing Canary Wharf office in London. This was the chance of a lifetime: London is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world and a major financial services hub. During my time in London I had the opportunity to rub shoulders with a phenomenally diverse set of professionals. I found this experience to be both empowering and motivating.

While on secondment, I led a team of new graduates that had begun their journey at the firm. Working with a team with passion and eagerness to learn gave me greater confidence in myself and allowed me to share accounting best practice on a global level.

During my career, one of the most important lessons I have learnt is the significance of the professional relationships I develop not only with clients, but also with my colleagues across various functions. I believe when clients choose KPMG, it is because of our people. Our teams have a wealth of experience in their fields, come from a range of nationalities and educational backgrounds, and have worked around the globe.

Another crucial skill I have learned over the years is effective time management—how to balance work and personal life, making time for family, friends and myself. Over the years, I have become more organized, using a diary, reviewing my time usage, and learning when to tell my team that I am overburdened. Fortunately we have a marvelous support system and the senior management team are always willing to give advice and help ease the load.

To unwind, I love travelling and tracking down new restaurants to try. I have visited more than forty countries! One of my most memorable trips was a jaunt to the United States, where we visited five cities in a fortnight, from New York to Las Vegas to Los Angeles.

"I would advise any new graduates looking to apply to KPMG to keep an open mind, build their people skills, and remember that success is a product of your openness to learning." Every year, my job has become more interesting and fulfilling. As you progress up the career ladder, the more responsibility you shoulder, but the greater the rewards.
